Movies By The Tower - August 2024

Posted August 1st 2024

This summer marks the third anniversary of the Movies by the Tower series, a collaboration between Scarecrow Video and the Maple Leaf Community Council. What began as an outdoor family movie night in Councilmember Billy Thompson’s backyard has quickly grown to a community event that now spans the Maple Leaf Reservoir Park. In 2023, organizers estimated that over a thousand people gathered under the stars to watch the specially curated films throughout the summer. This year, the series theme is “Women in Film.” Women directed the three films selected (directors Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, and Penny Marshall). Each features female protagonists with feminist themes. The series kicks off Saturday, August 10th, and continues throughout the month.

Saturday, August 10 at 7pm -- A Wrinkle in Time (2018, PG): Based on the timeless classic, this celebrated film follows an ordinary girl’s epic adventure and brave journey to save her family. Directed by Ava DuVernay.

Saturday, August 17 at 7pm -- Barbie (2023, PG-13): Hi Barbie! Yes, Greta Gerwig’s funny feminist manifesto that broke box office records will undoubtedly draw a large crowd at Maple Leaf Park. Starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll who gets a taste of the human world—and, oh yeah, Ryan Gosling also makes an appearance.

Saturday, August 24 at 7pm -- A League of Their Own (1992, PG): Based on the real-life professional women's baseball league, the fictional story of two sisters who struggle to help their team succeed amid their own growing rivalry. Directed by Penny Marshall.
