It's New Release Tuesday! Senegalese classics, twisted actresses, early Coppola, and more!
YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW (1966) (WARNER ARCHIVE)
Bernard Chanticleer (Peter Kastner) is a very nice young man anxious to step out into the "adult world." His plan is to move out of his parents' Long Island house into an eighth-floor Greenwich Village walkup – and try to convince someone to share his new "liberated lifestyle" with him. This was Francis Ford Coppola's UCLA Film School Master thesis – and a hilarious, high-speed debut in film comedy for the future maker of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Fresh off A Patch of Blue, Elizabeth Hartman bewitchingly plays the free spirit who tempts Bernard. Karen Black makes her own screen debut as the love object that lovesick Bernard overlooks and Geraldine Page nearly steals the show with her Academy Award-nominated performance as Bernard's possessive mother. (BLU-RAY)
MAY DECEMBER (2023)
Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past. Why did a 36 year old woman date a 13 year old boy, and why are they still together? (BLU-RAY and DVD)
XALA (1975) (Criterion Collection)
An adaptation of Ousmane Sembène’s own 1973 novel, Xala is a hilarious, caustic satire of political corruption under an inept patriarchy. On the night of his wedding to his third bride, government official El Hadji (Thierno Leye) is rendered impotent and begins to suspect that one of his other wives has placed a curse on him. After seeking a cure from a local marabout, El Hadji must face the possibility that he deserves the infliction for his part in embezzling public funds and for helping to keep Senegal under French control. Adeptly combining elements of African folklore and popular cinema, Sembène indicts the hubris, entitlement, and opportunism of male authority figures. (DVD and BLU-RAY)
DE HUMANI CORPORIS FABRICA (2022)
Five centuries ago, anatomist André Vésale opened up the human body to science for the first time in history. Today, De Humani Corporis Fabrica opens the human body to the cinema. It reveals that human flesh is an extraordinary landscape that exists only through the gaze and attention of others. As places of care, suffering and hope, hospitals are laboratories that connect every body in the world. (DVD)
ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU (1996)
On a remote island in the South Pacific, Dr. Moreau uses the key of science to unlock the gates of Hell. Val Kilmer (Heat), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter films), Fairuza Balk (The Craft), and two-time Academy Award®-winner* Marlon Brando star in this fantastic sci-fi thriller based on the best-selling novel by H.G. Wells. Stan Winston's Creature Workshop (Jurassic Park) brought the frighteningly real special effects to life. (BLU-RAY)
