This is not our definitive statement on which films have the "correct" politics. Some of these films you may find anarchic, some nihilistic, some didactic, hypocritical, liberal, electoralist, pro-establishment, vague, romanticized, or overly-idealistic.
However it's a collection of movies that we felt were worthy of this list for any of a number of reasons. Each film on this list will do at least one of the following:
- Inspire critical thought or political action on the side of human dignity
- Offer guidance on what we might, could (or definitely should not) do
- Expose social realities
- Teach us about material history
- Preserve images of a suppressed or censored past
- Revise the dominant parrative on history
- Imagine alternate histories
- Show us possible futures
- Tell stories worth telling about the complexities of human thought and behavior
- Condemn the corrupting forces of capitalism and fascism over and over again
- Demonstrate the human impulse towards love and cooperation amid destruction
